HOMES: The Great Lakes Institute, 2008
HOMES was a relational performance/installation work that was
presented as part of Ice Follies 2008 in North Bay, Ontario. The work
involved renovating a pre-existing ice fishing hut and turning it into a
portable office. The office was transplanted onto frozen Lake Nipissing
wherein Derek Knight, Melissa Smith and myself met with locals to
discuss various subjects including Lake Nipissing receiving official
Great Lake status. Many people opposed this notion as they
associated the Great Lakes with pollution, industry and
over-population. An index card filing cabinet was an important part
of this office where visitors could add, take or leave information
regarding their relationships with Lake Nipissing and its ecologies.
