Self-recorded record, 2003
This vinyl record was made from traveling from Toronto, to Manhattan
,
to New Jersey and then back to Toronto to record the industrial sounds
of a record being fabricated. An unanticipated problem arose, however.
How do you fit 103 minutes of sound onto a 20-minute record? To solve
this problem I sped up audio in post and had a record player modified to
play back at 5.8 rpms. This work is a tribute to Robert Morris’s “Box
with the Sound of its own Making” from 1961.
